Cruisers spend triple on souvenirs

New research from an independent online cruising travel agency has revealed that holidaymakers on cruises spend triple the amount of money on souvenirs than those on dry land holidays; with the majority of cruisers claiming that they buy ‘at least one souvenir’ in each port.

A new study conducted by an independent online cruising travel agency has given an insight into Britons’ spending habits when it comes to souvenirs on holiday; comparing how spending habits differ between various holidays.

www.bonvoyage.co.uk conducted the poll of 2,005 Britons aged 18 and over; of which 1,002 respondents went on a ‘dry land’ holiday for their last trip abroad, and the remaining 1,003 last went on a cruise. Each respondent had been away for a 7 day period.

The study initially asked all respondents if they had purchased souvenirs on their last holiday abroad, to which the vast majority, 89% said ‘yes’. The respondents were then asked to specify how much they spent on souvenirs on their last trip.

According to the results, the study found out that the average spend on souvenirs by people on dry land holidays was £17.14; whilst the cruising holidaymakers taking part had spent an average £58.60. The results therefore found that cruisers, on average, spend triple that of dry land holidaymakers on souvenirs.

The respondents who had purchased souvenirs on holiday were then asked to explain why they had done so. The majority of cruise respondents, 64% , claimed to feel tempted to buy souvenirs due to the multiple cities they had visited on the cruise; whilst the majority of dry land holidaymakers, 49%, had done so to ‘purchase items cheaper than at home.’ Furthermore, the majority of the cruisers taking part, 55%, had bought ‘one souvenir per port’ that they had visited.

When asked what type of souvenirs they had purchased, the most popular answer amongst cruise respondents with 57% was ‘trinkets/ items for the home.’ In contrast, the most popular answer amongst dry land holidaymakers for 52% of the respondents was ‘local alcohol.’

Steph Curtin, Cruise Development Manager of bonvoyage.co.uk, spoke about the findings:

Buying souvenirs for friends and family can be quite a big financial commitment on top of the cost of the holiday itself, especially when it depends on the amount of people you want to buy presents for. It was surprising to see that cruisers spend so much more than ‘dry land’ holidaymakers, and it seems that people are definitely making the most of the gifts on offer!

She continued:

When going on a cruise, you get the chance to visit a variety of different cities and ports, and it’s easy to be tempted to buy something every time you stop in a new port. Buying souvenirs is just part of the fun, so as long as you can afford the load you’re hauling back to the UK, we say why not!
