Portugal has recently been voted the best European Holiday destination by Danish tourism professionals and on-line consumers, in Denmark’s 13th yearly ‘Danish Travel Awards’ tourism award ceremony.

Head of the Portuguese Tourism Institute, Luis Patrao, attributed this latest award to Portugal’s “innovative initiatives”, concerning promotion and marketing abroad.

“We have tired to promote more culture and entertainment, and to involve well-known personalities at our international exhibitions”, he explained, using the ‘Portugal West Coast’ campaign, in which photos of football coach Jose Marinho and fado singer Mariza were used, as an example. Luis Patrao also said that, following the coveted title attributed by the Danish Travel Awards, “Portugal’s image has come out bigger and better than ever”.

Last September Portugal was also distinguished by the World Travel Awards, in which some 65,000 professionals took part.

Besides being picked as best European Destination, the Danish Travel Awards also chose the Portuguese Tourism Institute as best official association, outshining countries such as Greece, Italy, Germany and Spain.

In 2007 around 100,000 Danes visited Portugal, being responsible for 475,000 nights spent in the country, an average of 4.7 nights each spent in Portugal, and a total expenditure of 79 million Euros.

According to the Portuguese Tourism Board, more Danes visited Portugal this year, these figures having risen so far by an estimated 6.2 per cent, in comparison to 2008.

The Portuguese Tourism Board also revealed that last year the country hosted 75,000 Finnish guests, 112,000 Swedes, and 89,000 Norwegian visitors from Scandinavia.
