Despite weather reports, over 15m Brits heading off to the seaside over the bank holiday weekend

Brits really do like to be beside the seaside especially over a bank holiday weekend according to new research from MINT credit card

Brits really do like to be beside the seaside especially over a bank holiday weekend according to new research from MINT credit card. According to the survey, 15million people (34% of Brits) are planning to visit a coastal town in the UK over the last summer bank holiday weekend of the year. Brighton is most likely to be the top destination for those looking for that last dose of seaside fresh air, with a fifth (21%) of people choosing it as their favourite seaside resort.

The findings are part of the definitive British bank holiday study for MINT which identified top activities and experiences as chosen in a poll by the public, ranging from theme parks to nationals parks, seaside towns to city breaks.

Key findings of the survey:

Brighton was voted the UK`s best seaside resort for a bank holiday visit due to its sea front attractions including the pier and shops and also for having a range of activities that appeal to all tastes as well as having a good nightlife. Blackpool was runner up, with Whitby in third place for the best fish and chips.

Alton Towers was voted the best theme park to visit over the bank holiday, for its exciting rides including the classic Log Flume and for thrill seekers, Air and Nemesis. Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Legoland Windsor were also voted top theme parks in the UK.

The Lake District was voted outright as the best national park to visit due to having the most beautiful walks. Runner up in the national park category was the Peak District.

London, followed by Edinburgh and York were voted the top three places to go for a city break over the bank holiday weekend.

In addition to these popular activities, a quarter (23%) of people said that they would be taking part in a more unusual activity over the bank holiday such as sedan chair racing or visiting the World Bog Snorkelling Championships which can be seen at Llanwrtyd Wells and Tunbridge Wells respectively.

Fay Hogg, at MINT commented: As the August bank holiday is the last freebie holiday of the summer there is always much debate about how best to use it. You`d need a seriously good reason not to make the most of next Monday with so many exciting experiences and activities to take part in.

Tom Wright, VisitBritain chief executive, said:There is a whole range of experiences and activities available to suit every taste over the bank holiday ranging from tried and tested favourites like Brighton to more unusual events. It would be a waste not to do something special – either try something new or something you enjoy – after all you`ve got over 6 months** to wait until the next bank holiday.

VisitBritain and MINT has compiled a list of the top 10 recommended unusual events around England and Wales for the bank holiday period:
