The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) moved to back IATA`s legal action against the European Union regulation on passenger compensation.

ERA Director of Air Transport Policy Andrew Clarke said: We have applied to the Court to file evidence in support of IATA`s case. We have good reason to hope that the court will allow the evidence to be admitted when the case is heard.

The EU`s new law – officially titled Compensation and Assistance for Passengers in the event of denied boarding, cancellation or long delay is due to come into effect next year. IATA has mounted a legal challenge which will receive a preliminary hearing in the UK High Court on 14 July.

ERA is particularly concerned that measures in the regulation will produce effects, which are disproportionate when compared to the problem the European Union is seeking to solve, added Mr Clarke.

Director General of ERA, Mike Ambrose has already voiced concerns that: The law will add €1.5bn to airlines` annual costs causing them to axe flights or raise fares throughout Europe.
