The Mayor of Madrid, Jose Maria Alvarez del Manzano, and Iberia`s Chairman Xabier de Irala, last week formally opened Iberia<.>`s new VIP lounge in Madrid`s Barajas Airport. Christened Velazquez, the lounge has an area of 1,700 square meters (more than double the size of its predecessor) and features everything a traveller may need for rest, entertainment or work. The lounge is Spain`s largest and one of the world`s best.

The new Velazquez room is in Terminal 1 and will be used principally by First Class and Business Class passengers in transit to or from international destinations in Latin America, non-Schengen Europe, North Africa and the Republic of South Africa. The lounge may also be used by business passengers flying on other oneworld alliance airlines. It can comfortably accommodate more than 250 people and it is expected to be used by some 200,000 passengers each year.

The new lounge has separate areas for First Class and Business Class passengers, separate smoking and non-smoking areas, television rooms, flight information panels, bars, hydromassage showers with all toiletry items, special washrooms for the disabled and for infants, facilities for checking coats and storing luggage and more.

It also has a conference room that may be reserved in advance and a Business Centre featuring PC booths with colour printers, free internet and email access, fax service via email, wireless connections and power outlets for laptops and a LAN printer. All this equipment was supplied by Fujitsu-Siemens.

It also has sleeping areas with fully reclining deck chairs. Blankets and pillows are available to First Class passengers.

Its technical characteristics, equipment and services make the new Velazquez room one of the world`s best VIP lounges.
