Iberia Airlines<.> has published a report on environmental policies and actions in the past year, which shows highly positive results.

The report highlights the gradual reduction of specific fuel consumption in the 1991-2000, when this reduction reached 20%. This was made possible largely by the incorporation of most fuel-efficient aircraft into the Iberia fleet, and the withdraw from service of the of the older Boeing 727s and DC-9s this year as well as DC-10s in 2000. These airplanes were replaced by modern Airbus A-320s and A-340s, along with B-757s. All these aircraft burn less fuel per payload and emit less polluting exhaust than their predecessors.

During the period considered, the Environmental Committee of the international Civil Aviation Organization set new maximum noise-emission standards levels for aircraft, which will come into force in 2006.

In 2001 Iberia draw up its own new regulation for internal management of non-dangerous wastes, within its environmental protection policy.

As regards the recycling of computer equipment, Iberia has reached an agreement with suppliers of new equipment whereby they will repurchase the older hardware and recycle it. To save paper, the sales division has developed a project for eliminating its use altogether, by storing all records digitally.

Last year Iberia`s Materials Department drew up a Green Registry of environmentally safe materials, and Iberia is not weight the adoption of ISO 14000 standards for environmental protection management.

On are of collaboration with its partners in the oneworld alliance is Iberia`s participation in the Environment Group, charged with setting common environmental aims for the airlines.

Iberia is a member of the oneworld alliance together with Air Lingus, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, LanChile and Qantas.
