According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, there has been a positive growth in Slovenian tourism in the first nine months of this year.

From January to the end of September 2002, 1.7 million tourists visited Slovenia, 4 percent more than over the same period last year. Over a million of these were foreign tourists, which compared to the same time last year is greater by 8 percent.

During this nine-month period the largest number of turists came from Italy, 217,395 visitors. Compared to last year, this figure has risen by 3 percent. German tourists followed with 199,471 in total, down by 2 percent from last year. Austrian tourists numbered 149,341 in this nine-month period, up by 14 percent since this time last year, while the number of Croatian tourists remained relatively the same compared to last year, at 71,667 visitors up until the end of September.

Growth was also apparent when looking at overnight stays: in the first nine months this year, we had more than 6 million stays, a 2 percent increase from last year. From these figures, 3.3 million overnight stays belonged to foreign guests, a 5 percent increase from last year. The most frequent overnighters were German tourists, who comprised 743,011 of total overnight stays (a fall of 3 percent from this time last year), followed by our Italian guests with 586,466 overnight stays (a 5 percent jump from last year). Austrian guests made up a similar 517,003 overnight stays, an even more impressive jump of 12 percent from last year, and finally our Croatian neighbors, that stayed in total 203,275 times (a single percent down from last year).
