Renovations for Glasgow Airport reveil a new face for 2006

In Glasgow Airport two new passengers lounges – including a business lounge – are set to open in the  spring as part of a £10 million expansion of the airport’s international pier.

The development is the first stage of a £50 million re-development of the main terminal building that will ultimately see a second international pier built within the next ten years.

The new upper floor lounges will offer commanding views over the airfield and runway and will be available to business and leisure travellers.

Below, the airport’s main international departure lounge, first opened in 1994, is also getting a new makeover. A new extension will also open in the spring, offering new retail units, a bar and restaurant and additional seating areas.

The expansion reflects the growth in international traffic at Glasgow Airport. Over the past twelve months, international passenger numbers have increased by 6%, a trend that looks set to continue in the future as the airport expands and attracts new airlines. By 2030, almost three million people are expected to fly long haul to and from Glasgow Airport.

Development manager Cameron Philip said: “This significant investment in our international pier facilities underlines our determination to attract new international airlines to Glasgow. Not only will these projects increase the physical capacity of the terminal, they will – more importantly – create a more enjoyable and relaxing experience for departing passengers.”

The first phase of the international pier expansion – a ground floor extension of the international arrivals hall, incorporating a fourth baggage reclaim belt – was completed last summer.

The airport celebrates its 40th anniversary on 27 June 2006.
