Greece is the word! Holiday price plunge

This year is a totally different ball game as hoteliers keen to encourage travellers to the region have dropped prices significantly leading to an all round price plunge. Bookings up 70% year on year; Only 22% of bookings by families – taking longer to rebuild confidence.

Online travel agent Broadway Travel reports a major increase in bookings to Greece in 2014 of over 70% compared to the same period in 2013 backing Harriet Green‘s (Thomas Cook) observations that the destination is back in favour again with the UK holidaymaker.

Product & Marketing Director, Jason Waldron, comments: “The economic crisis meant Greece fell out of favour last year for many UK holidaymakers who opted to travel elsewhere as would be tourists took fright at the prospect of strikes and street protests.

This year is a totally different ball game as hoteliers keen to encourage travellers to the region have dropped prices significantly leading to an all round price plunge. By booking early, tourists can take advantage of some excellent rates with holidays starting from as little as £249 and enjoy the stunning beaches, historical attractions and guaranteed good weather that have made Greece so popular in the past.”

Statistics from Broadway Travel reveal that All Inclusive holidays to the island are especially popular – 77% of all holidays booked from January to March 2014 fell into this category.  Waldron believes these packages give consumers clear reassurance around the total cost of the holiday which is useful for budget planning.

Interestingly, families appear to be holding back on booking their summer break with only 22% of the holidays to Greece booked by families. Families, for obvious reasons, tend to be more risk averse, so perhaps it will take slightly longer for the family trips to bounce back.
