I'm dreaming of a tablet Christmas

Tablet computers revolutionise travel for the over 50s, who are jumping onto the trend at an extraordinary rate according to escorted holidays company, The Travel Department.

It’s going to be a rockin’, rollin’, tablet Christmas this year, especially for the over 50s who are jumping onto the trend at an extraordinary rate according to escorted holidays company, The Travel Department.

Some retailers are reporting a whopping 1000% surge in tablets purchased over the last year, with one tablet expected to be sold every second in the days leading up to Christmas. The tour operator has reported seeing the result of this revolution in a rapid and phenomenal change in the way its customers are interacting with the company.

Research of the over 50s age group by The Travel Department found that 76% are now influenced by travel company websites when choosing their holiday destination – with only personal recommendation carrying more weight as a source of information.

Meanwhile, destinations that traditionally attract an older age group such as Benidorm and Rome are ranking highest on tablet destination searches, according to Google. In fact, a whopping 45% of all Google destination searches for Benidorm are on mobile devices (phones and tablets).

The Travel Department is meeting the demands of its customers with a new tablet friendly website, e-ticketing and updated social media channels where customers can interact with their tour manager before departure. The new website will include a personalised ‘My Travel Department’ area, where customer can check the status of their booking and print out itineraries and pre-departure information. Further technological advances are planned for later in the year.

Tim Williamson, CEO of The Travel Department commented “Gone are the days when older holidaymakers need to be offered a more traditional style of service when booking and taking a holiday. They are embracing new technology at a startling rate and we are seeing many of our customers bringing their tablets on holiday with them, yet many of our competitors are still treating them as if they don’t know what the internet is.”

The Travel Department offers quality escorted holidays worldwide, with destinations ranging from the Costa Brava to Cuba and the Algarve to Argentina.
