There is a general threat from domestic terrorism

UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office issued a travel advice for travellers in Greece.

The advice as follows:
"On 6,7, 8 and 9 December 2008 there were riots and violence in the centre of Athens.  Thessaloniki, Patras, Trikala, Ioannina, Corfu, Samos and Crete have also experienced unrest.  Further protests are expected.  Travellers are advised to exercise extreme caution in the centres of Athens, Thessaloniki and other big cities.  Visitors should avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place or there are other signs of unrest and remain vigilant until the situation calms.

Strikes and demonstrations are expected to cause disruption in Athens during December. There may be disruption to public services. There will be a 24-hour strike at Athens International Airport from midnight on 9 December to midnight on 10 December 2008.  People intending to travel to Greece during this period should check the latest situation with their airline and tour operator before departure.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.  You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.

Around three million British people visit Greece (and its islands) every year (Source: Civil Aviation Authority). Most visits are trouble-free but you should maintain at least the same level of personal security awareness as you would in the UK. 1,910 British nationals required consular assistance in Greece in the period 01 April 2006 – 31 March 2007. The main types of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Greece in 2006-07 were for replacing lost or stolen passports (276 cases); dealing with deaths (131 cases); and hospitalisations (602 cases); and dealing with arrests for a variety of offences (230 cases)."
