Aena’s airports in Spain close February 2024 with an all- time record of passengers

They recorded over 19.2 million passengers, 15.7% more than last year. Between January February, the number of passengers reached almost 38 million, 12.9% more than in 2023.

The airports of the Aena network in Spain have closed the second month of 2024 with an all-time record number of passengers and cargo in a month of February, thus maintaining the upward trend of the previous month and of most of last year. In February 2024, which unlike last year has one more day, Aena received 19,226,616 passengers, 15.7% more than in the same month of 2023; it handled 167,238 aircraft movements, 8.4% more than in 2023.

Of the total number of passengers in February, 19,145,647 were commercial passengers: 12,449,872 travelled on international flights, 18.1% more than in February 2023, while 6,695,775 travelled on domestic flights, 11.5% more than last year.

During the first two months of 2024, 37,893,828 passengers passed through Aena airports (12.9% more than in 2023), 333,147 aircraft movements were recorded (+7.2%) and 187,242 tonnes of cargo were transported, 20.8% more than in the same period of 2023.

Passengers

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the second month of the year with 4,713,881, growth of 12.9% compared with February last year. This is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 3,651,911 (+16.6% compared with 2023); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 1,423,329 (+26.7%); Gran Canaria, with 1.322,916 (+13.8%); Tenerife Sur, with 1,218,089 (+15.4%); Palma de Mallorca, with 1,035,243 (+14.3%) and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1,002,310 (+26.8%).

In addition to the Aena network as a whole, in February, record passenger numbers were recorded at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Sevilla, Valencia, Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, Tenerife Sur, César Manrique-Lanzarote, Asturias, Bilbao, Ibiza, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Melilla, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, Menorca, Badajoz, La Palma and La Gomera airports.

Operations

In terms of operations, the airport with the most movements in February was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 30,937 (+10.9% compared with 2023), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 23.587 flights (+13.6%); Gran Canaria, with 11,606 (+12.7%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 10,122 (+18.1%); Palma de Mallorca, with 9,060 (+8.3%); Tenerife Sur, with 7,779 (+10.3%) and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 6,371 landings and take-offs (+21.1%).

In the second month of 2024, record movements were reached at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Norte Ciudad de La Laguna, Tenerife Sur, César Manrique-Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro and Burgos airports.
