EL AL Boeing 747-400s makes last run on the New York route

The present model of this EL AL Jumbo, the 747-400, began operating on the airline’s New York route in 1994.

Last Saturday night, for the very last time, an EL AL 747 Jumbo aircraft departed from New York on Flight LY008 to Ben Gurion Airport. Since 1971, EL AL’s various Jumbo models have operated tens of thousands of flights on the airline’s New York route. With this flight, EL AL is parting ways with the Jumbo fleet on this route.

The present model of this EL AL Jumbo, the 747-400, began operating on the airline’s New York route in 1994.

The Boeing 747-400 fleet is to be terminated officially at the end of October 2019 when the last two Jumbo aircraft will be retired and replaced by new Dreamliner aircraft.

Flight LY008, which will land this afternoon in Tel Aviv, marks the termination of the Jumbo fleet’s tens of thousands of flights on EL AL’s New York route which began in 1971.

Retiring the aircraft from service at the end of October is part of the airline’s strategy to phase out EL AL’s veteran airplanes and replace them with new, advanced aircraft. This week EL AL will add to its fleet a 12th Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, named Jerusalem of Gold. By March 2020, 4 additional 787-8 aircraft are expected to enter the airline’s service.
