Best value cities for weekend explorers

Lisbon, Portugal

Here are some fantastic options for affordable cities to visit in 2019.

There’s nothing quite like jetting off for a weekend break, exploring a new city can give you a boost of inspiration and new lust for life. When work is getting you down, you feel like you need a change of scenery, or perhaps you just want to make the most of your weekends, a city break is the perfect option. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive, you can bag tonnes of flights around Europe for as little ten pounds (sometimes even less!) with a budget airline, and by using online comparison sites for your hotel you can save some serious cash.

Here are some fantastic options for affordable cities to visit in 2019, are you ready to experience a serious case of wanderlust? Let’s jump right in…

Lisbon, Portugal
Portugal’s capital city is a vibrant destination, bursting with creativity and the best Patel de Nata you can feast your eyes upon. It’s also surprisingly affordable with hotels, transport, food and drink all much cheaper when compared to other European cities (we’re looking at you, Paris). Expect cobbled streets, beautifully tiled buildings, plenty of pastel colours, a glistening river, lots of hills and delicious food. Make sure you pack your comfiest pair of trainers, Lisbon isn’t exactly a heel friendly kind of city and the best way to explore is doing so on foot. Attractions to add to your list include Belém Tower, São Jorge Castle, the historic winding streets of Alfama and the MAAT.

Tallinn, Estonia
If cheap beer is what you’re after, you’re in the right place! Whilst there’s a lot more to Tallinn than the cheap beer it is a bonus. This 1000-year-old city is brimming with interesting architecture, museums, galleries and cafes. If you happen to be visiting over the festive period, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful Christmas markets with a mulled wine in hand. The pastel coloured buildings that make up the city are charming, and you’ll notice a strong medieval influence too. This is a fairy-tale city break that won’t set your finances back too much.

Budapest, Hungary
If you can go the whole trip without breaking into George Ezra, we salute you. Budapest is a fantastic city to visit for a long weekend with plenty to see and do, all for a reasonable price. The Hungarian capital is picture perfect so be sure to have your best smile ready for the camera. Points of interest to add to your itinerary include Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, St Stephen’s Basilica, the Parliament buildings and the city’s popular thermal baths. Bathing is a major pastime for locals so don’t forget to pack your swimming costume, you can enjoy the year-round warm water and unwind from a busy morning of sightseeing.

Krakow, Poland
Krakow is a popular city break destination and despite its rising popularity among tourists, it remains very affordable. Appreciate the city’s colourful wall art, be inspired at Oskar Schindler’s former factory, gaze at the beautiful Wawel Castle and step into the fairy-tale old town for authentic charm (and a great Instagram shot). The vibrant Kazimierz neighbourhood is another gem to add to your list, the historic Jewish district is bursting with museums, art, galleries, and bars.

The only question left is, which one to book first?
