Bored at the airport? Try these ideas to kill time

Many airports have cafes that let you “rent” a table by buying a cup of coffee or making an order. This is a good way to use the time instead of just sitting around and thinking about all the things you need to do when you’re back home again.

Waiting for a flight at the airport can be tedious. But it doesn't have to be boring. There are plenty of things to do to keep yourself occupied, from reading to playing games. Here are some ideas to get you started.

People watching
Airports are great places to watch people. Observe the different ways they behave and interact with other people while waiting for their flight. See what types of conversations you can eavesdrop on and try to figure out where the person is going from the little bits of information you gathered, or even make up stories about them in your head to keep yourself entertained.

Watching planes take off and land
Planes taking off and landing at airports can be very interesting – depending on how close by air traffic is heavy. Try watching the planes land or take off from certain points along the tarmac. This is especially fun when you can watch the planes take off or land right in front of your eyes.

Play some games
There are plenty of games on your phone that you can play whenever boredom pops up during waiting time. If you don't have any games on your phone, play some in your head. You can also play simple memory or word games with the people around you to kill time during waiting periods. And playing all these games will actually help you stay sharp.

Get some work done
Getting work done while waiting for your flight is a great way to pass the time and make use of this downtime when you have nothing else to do. Check out what's happening in the news via headlines scrolling across TVs in the airport, read up on topics that interest you, or catch up on work documents that are piling up in your inbox at home – without being distracted by notifications from your phone. Some airports even offer free Wi-Fi, so you can get work done while waiting for your flight.

Many airports have cafes that let you "rent" a table by buying a cup of coffee or making an order. This is a good way to use the time instead of just sitting around and thinking about all the things you need to do when you're back home again. If not, look for a cafe in the city nearest to the airport where there are plenty of places to sit down.

Read
You could kill time reading books, magazines, e-books on your phone or tablet – or all three! Get some reading material at one of the gift shops in the airport before boarding starts if they close earlier than usual (like they often do) during quieter periods of the day. If you like to read on paper, look for a newsstand or convenience store near the airport and stock up on your reading material there – before waiting hours in line for security check-in.

Many airports also have bookshops with fewer titles but more variety than what you'll find at larger stores in the city. You can pass some time by browsing through these shops' collections and picking out something that interests you in reading during your wait.

Play some live casino games online
There are plenty of live online casino games that you can play whenever boredom pops up during waiting time. You'll need an internet connection for this, though, so if you don't have your own, look for hotspots around the airport to go to where you can access free Wi-Fi to use any internet-capable device – or find a cafe nearby and buy something there.

Check your itinerary
If you've got your boarding pass, check the departure time and gate number. Also, check your backpack. If it's delayed, you can expect to wait even longer for your plane, so take this into consideration if there are places in the city near the airport where you could go until your plane boards or departs. The terminal might also be crowded at this time too, so think about whether you want to deal with that scene before preparing yourself for an extended wait.

Once you're on board, keep track of how long the flight will take by checking out the map showing estimated travel times between cities anytime throughout the flight. You'll know better what to expect when landing instead of getting bored by waiting, because it can feel like a flight takes forever – but just be careful that too much clock-watching doesn’t make the flight drag either!
