Four top things to do when not travelling

The following article details 4 things that you can do when you’re not travelling, or just on a break from your normal travel routine.

For those of us who love to travel and have not been able to fulfill our raison d'etre, it has been a tough 18 months or so. And even though the travel industry is opening up and we can soon look forward to visiting some of the greatest tourist spots in the world or are itching to travel for work, it is important to have a plan B.

The following article details 4 things that you can do when you're not travelling, or just on a break from your normal travel routine.

1. Read
The pandemic has fueled a massive surge in book sales and there are some excellent new titles to consider as you find yourself unable to travel. While book sales had been slow prior to 2019, there was a growth of 12% in fiction books in 2020 strongly assisted by the trend of working from home and being unable to socialize. In particular, sales in travel and wellness books have done very well and are proving popular for all readers.  So, whether you're snowed in or taking a break, why not pick up a new book to read.

2. Exercise outdoors
Whether it be walking or marathon running doing something outdoors is a great way to keep travel ready. Research has shown that more than 60% of adults believe it is now more important to be active than they did pre-COVID. So, whether you have additional time on your hands or are hoping to keep fit for an adventurous holiday coming up, there are many reasons to pick up the dumbbells and the trainers and get moving. This has become even easier with wearables that can track our progress and remind us to get up and go.

3. Plan trips
The trips that you hope to take again soon can be planned in full. Even if you are not able to go to an international destination, you can plan a road trip or local trip that will be as exciting and interesting. There are so many places to explore that spending time plotting a route and reading other travelers' experiences is worth doing. Visiting family for the seasoned international traveler may not seem like much, but the inter-town/city trips to visit family can sate the travel bug and are a great way to re-connect with those in far-flung villages and towns.

4. Sort previous travel photos
Then think about using them in a blog. If you have cloud storage burgeoning with photographs from previous trips, then you can use some spare time to share those experiences with others. You can set up a dedicated Instagram account or a travel blog to document the trips and ensure they are available for future trips down memory lane. If you have a real passion for landscape or travel photography, you could even monetize your hobby by printing your photographs and selling them.

These are simple yet effective ways to overcome the fact that we are unable to travel as freely as we would like to yet may be able to do those things that will prepare us for continued travel to international destinations.
