How to pass the time on a long train journey

There are various activities that can make your travel experience much more bearable. Find out how to pass the time on a long train journey.

If you are planning to go interrailing this year, or maybe you are journeying your way across South East Asia by train, you will more than likely want the hours to fly by during travel to quickly reach your chosen destination(s).

Fortunately, there are various activities that can make your travel experience much more bearable. Find out how to pass the time on a long train journey.

Take a tablet computer for the ride
A tablet computer can be the ultimate travel companion during a long trip. If you can gain access to a Wi-Fi connection on a train, you’ll be able to browse the internet, answer emails, and watch online videos during travel. Plus, you can fill the device with various books, movies, and games. You could even place a bet at the likes of Unibet and then watch a game unfold on the screen. So, there will be no reason to be bored during a train ride.

Listen to music
How often do you have the time to just sit back, relax, and listen to your favorite band or singer? Use the train journey as the perfect excuse to listen to your much-loved albums or familiarize yourself with the latest songs, which can transport you a million miles away from a carriage. You could even create a superb playlist in advance to listen to during a journey. It can be a great way to drown out the noise from other passengers.

Tune into a podcast
If you have worked your way through a playlist during a long train ride, you always have the option to listen to an interesting podcast. Some of the best podcasts include:
 • Cheddar’s Need2Know
 • Science Rules! With Bill Nye
 • Dare I Say
 • The Daily
 • Undisclosed

There will be a topic and style to suit every personality, which can entertain you during your journey.

Play card games
Traveling with a friend, partner, or relative? Take a deck of cards with you for the ride, so you can play a fun game during your trip, such as rummy, slap jack or gin rummy, as detailed here by The Spruce. If you’re traveling alone, you could even play a game or two of solitaire.

Strike up a conversation
If you want to keep loneliness at bay when traveling alone, strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger if an opportunity arises, which can help the hours to quickly pass by. It can be a great way to make a new friend before you have even reached a destination, or they might be filled with advice for the best places to visit and activities to try once you arrive.

Go to sleep
A long train journey could make you feel both irritable and tired. To make a long ride feel much shorter, bring a neck pillow with you, and aim to enjoy some shuteye. It will ensure you feel relaxed and refreshed once you arrive at your destination, but ensure you leave enough time to enjoy a nap or you could miss your stop!
