Here, I would like to introduce you some attractive places for a quick cultural day trip while enjoying your vacation in Johor Bahru.

1. Jalan Tan Hiok Nee
Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is the oldest street in Johor Bahru. The street has a long history and some historic buildings can be found along the way. There is a Chinese history museum and many cafes. This is a great place to take pictures or admire the old town of Johor Bahru.

You can find traditional bakery Hiap Joo Bakery or Sallehudin Bakery in the area. You can also visit the Jalan Tan Hiok Nege night market in the evening.

The night market called Pasar Karat is open every night from 8pm. You can find clothes, shoes and fragrances as well as second-hand goods. If you bring a heritage walking guide, you’ll learn more about the area. You can buy heritage walking guides at the Chinese History Museum.

2.Old Chinese Temple
The ancient Chinese temple in Johor Bahru is located in the center of Johor Bahru, along Jalan Trus. It is the oldest religious building in Johor Bahru and the place with the most believers and tourists. According to the historical plaque, the temple began to operate in 1870, more than 140 years ago.

The temple is believed to be the first and only temple named after a state in Malaysia. It was built by Chinese religious leaders, including Mr. Chen Xunian, the founder of Yixing Company.

It was a cultural and religious attraction that still exists. Chingay, or procession of the gods, is its busiest time. During this event, statues from the temple are paraded through the streets. The annual procession of the deities is organized by the temple. It usually occurs in the 20th or 23rd month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

The parade lasts four days. The highlight is the third night when all the deities are paraded around Johor Bahru. The celebration was very lively, with drums and gongs, and lion and dragon dances. Devotees will carry the idol out of the temple and onto the streets.

3.Princess Cove
R&F Princess Cove is a large development with HOPSCA (Hotel Offices, Park Mall, Clubhouse and Apartments). It is strategically located along Jalan Tanjung Puteri and has a total land area of 116 acres. It is just 3 minutes away from CIQ Complex in Johor.

Princess Cove is located in a prime location in Johor Bahru, with the waterfront facing Singapore. The total number of units in this serviced residence is 3,224. Sizes range from 469 square feet for singles to 1386 square feet for families. Princess Cove Johor Bahru features a garden clubhouse, Seaview Ox Bar and an indoor cow bar. Princess Cove Johor Bahru also has a swimming pool, gym and children’s playground.

4. Istana Bukit Serene
Istana Bukit Serene is the official residence and royal palace of the Sultan of Johor, located in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Facing the Straits of Johor, the palace offers a bird’s-eye view of the former territory of the Sultanate of Singapore.

The 35-meter tower of Istana Bukit Serene is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Johor Bahru. Be amazed by the unique wall sculptures in this historic Art Deco building.

For security reasons, the gates of Istana Bukit Serene are closed. However, tourists can still take pictures and enjoy the magnificent view of the palace. A large and extensive garden forms part of the palace and is used for royal celebrations.

The Sultan’s personal army, the Johor Army, protects the palace. The crown arch that complements the palace was built by the Sultan of Johor as a gift to the people. If you are lucky, you may be able to see His Royal Highness entertaining visitors graciously.

It has been open to the public since 1991 and is now home to the Royal Abu Bakar Museum. Its architecture is both Western and Malay, which makes it stand out.

The palace hosts various royal events and famous personalities such as the Duke of Edinburgh (son of Queen Victoria), Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and many more.
