Riding during the Summer? What to know

Summer is a great time for bikers, but this will not be your typical summer and it is essential that you are sensible when you go out for solo or group rides due to the pandemic.

During the warmer months of the year, there is nothing quite like the open road on a motorcycle and it is likely that more riders than usual will be out with the Coronavirus outbreak restricting many other areas of life. This means that you need to be well-prepared if you are planning on using your motorcycle this sum-mer so read on for a few key areas to keep in mind.

COVID-19 Riders’ Safety Code
The Coalition of Motorcycling Organisations (COMO) recently released a new statement which provides guidance to bikers during the pandemic. It is important to familiarise yourself with the COVID-19 Riders’ Safety Code that they have pro-vided which outlines how people can get out and enjoy riding while still protecting their own and public health. This includes rules such as maintaining social distanc-ing, returning home on the same day, limiting stops and planning your route care-fully.

Plan and Manage Group Rides
COMO also provided further advice that builds on the COVID-19 Riders’ Code which relates to group rides. This involves no group rides with over 6 people, maintaining social distancing at all times (especially when stopped), clearly explaining the rules before setting off, making sure that no one should be self-isolating and limiting the number of fuel stops. Additionally, it is important which riders do not behave in a way which negatively represents the biking community as this has been a problem during the pandemic with media reports of large numbers gathering and not re-specting social distancing.

Quality Bike Maintenance
It is always important to maintain your ride to keep it in top condition, but this is particularly important now as you do not want to have an issue midway through a ride as it could be difficult to solve the problem due to social distancing, a lack of public transport and facilities being closed. It is also important that you have mo-torcycle insurance in place so that you have protection in place if you were to get into an accident while riding.

Summer is a great time for bikers, but this will not be your typical summer and it is essential that you are sensible when you go out for solo or group rides due to the pandemic. You should familiarise yourself with the COVID-19 Riders’ Code, plan your ride carefully, keep your bike in tip-top condition and always stay cur-rent with the news and any developments which could impact your riding this summer.
