Taking a break – What should i know about living in the UK

Taking a break from travelling doesn’t mean that your adventures need to stop completely.

If you want to pause your travels for the foreseeable future, you may have considered staying put in one of the countries you’ve visited. There may be different rules for doing so, depending on where the country is located. When living in the United Kingdom, it may be a good idea to consider how you will get by financially, as well as follow the guidelines. This can allow you to better enjoy your time, and even assimilate more into British society.

Sort out your accounts
Having a bank account can be fundamental when you live in the UK. This is usually how wages and benefits will be paid. You may need to have proof of where you live, as well as a valid visa, to do so. At the same time, you may also want to think about your future. Being able to save money and gain interest can be important, especially if you want to buy a house in the UK at some point, or even live out the rest of your days here. A Stocks and Shares ISA can be a good option for long-term savings. You may be able to choose how much risk is associated with your investment, but this can also affect the growth of your money.

Get a national insurance number
To be eligible for employment in the UK, you need to have a National Insurance number. This can be applied for as soon as you arrive. It is important to note that, while you can begin working before you receive this number, you may be put on an emergency tax code. Once you are registered, you may be able to receive any overpayments back. When working, you should only have that national insurance and general income tax deducted from your wages. Any other deductions, such as those for room and board, should be agreed with your employer and written into your contract.

Consider location
The different areas of the United Kingdom can contrast one another quite dramatically. Certain parts of the country may be significantly cheaper to live in than others, however, wages might reflect this. Likewise, you may find it easier to understand certain accents. For those who want to be immersed in different cultures, you may find that it is better to live within a larger city. It may be possible to move around, yet you might need to think about the cost of doing so, from finding work, deposits for rented accommodation, and even removal costs. Therefore, putting a good amount of thought into your location prior to looking for a home or job could be optimal.

Taking a break from travelling doesn’t mean that your adventures need to stop completely. However, this can be a good way of gaining more knowledge about a different country, and even understanding a bit more about what daily life is like. In time, should you choose to, you could then pack up and resume your travels.
