The Big Apple's Core

New York and the Statue of Liberty

New York is not a city that needs much in the way of advertising. It has one of the strongest claims to be the greatest city in the world and people flock from all over the globe to the eastern seaboard just for the chance to walk its streets.

The ubiquitous I-heart-NY T-shirts worn all around the world have actually spawned a fully legitimate website iloveny.com whose sole purpose is to help tourists around its grid of streets, and companies all over the world are offering cut price flights to the Big Apple. Flights to New York on sites like DialAFlight.com can reach as low as £300 return and there are more deals emerging every day.

Now, it’s impossible to cover all of New York’s sights in a single trip: you’ll need at least three days – and a good dose of stamina – to hit up the major highlights, but don’t get overwhelmed when you can’t cover all the bases. Not even people who consider themselves to be true born-and-bred New Yorkers haven’t got around everything. Getting to the core of the most famous big apple of all needs a bit of direction.

To begin: even though it is the largest tourist trap that has probably ever existed, a must-see is Times Square. A no-fly zone for locals (unless it’s rush hour), millions of tourists flock to this hectic stretch of Broadway from 40th to 53rd Streets (between Sixth and Eighth Avenues) each year to see what all the fuss is about.

Repeat and new visitors alike will be delighted to discover that, since May 2009, Duffy Square and two lanes of traffic in the area’s epicenter have been closed off to cars as a pedestrian plaza – with tables and chairs, 16-foot-tall ruby-red bleachers, and free Wi-Fi now permanent public features.

However, despite all these fancy thing the most impressive part of being in Times Square, or even just New York itself, is simply the being there. Just being in a place you have seen countless times in movies and realizing that you are really there yourself is something that cannot be matched. The hustle and bustle of the city adds to the feeling as well, leaving you happy in the knowledge that there is nothing in the world quite like it. It is more than worth a visit.
