Tokyo hotel tables apologies for “Japanese Only” sign

A hotel in Tokyo has tabled their apology while removing the signs that read "Japanese only" and "foreigners only" from elevators following the anti-Covid-19 precaution that ignited an outrage on social media with a few days to go before the opening of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Akasaka Excel Hotel Tokyu, which is located in downtown Tokyo, put up the signs on Friday as a response to guidance from Tokyo 2020 organizers to make sure to separate the guests, for the Olympics Games, from the ones staying at the hotel, according to a hotel official.

The hotel official, who refused to be identified due to the sensitivity of the topic, confirmed that they never had the intention to discriminate against foreigners. The official said: "We tried to make it easy to understand but ended up causing misunderstanding."

He went on to confirm that the signs were removed on Sunday morning and the hotel along with its headquarters was now discussing the best expression to use to guide the guests for the Olympics.

The signs brought forth harsh critics on social media, especially on Twitter, with one user tweeting: "Apartheid has been revived in Japan."

Another user compared the signs to US "Jim Crow" measures since it was struck down by courts, to keep the Black people from voting in the US Deep South.

A Twitter user with the name, Anna, wrote: "The virus has nothing to do with nationality." Japan has not witnessed the explosive coronavirus outbreak that could be seen in some countries, but they have registered over 815,440 cases and recorded almost 15,000 deaths. In just Tokyo alone, they recorded 614 new cases on Sunday, which is the 22nd straight day of week-on-week gains.

Japan's attempt at vaccination began with a slow start and although it later picked up the pace, glitches in supply caused it to drop once more. The report has it that only 28% of the population have received at least one shot at vaccine.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic issues in Japan, the Tokyo Olympics, which is the 29th edition of the Summer Games, will have spectators and athletes swimming in like no other. In other news, the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KOSC) launched a virtual hospitality house for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
