Unusual casino games played around the world

These games might seem a little unusual to people more used to traditional casino games, but when you take the time to see the process each game follows, they are interesting games to wager on.

While most people have made the move to gambling through online casinos, the casino game developers for these popular sites tend not to take many risks. They are creative in adding components to classic games that make them more appealing to a new generation of gamblers and titles such as Lightning Blackjack, Quantum Roulette, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire Slingo are examples that have proved very popular.

Yet, they tend not to stray into the unknown and firmly stick with traditional games that they know people enjoy playing. However, there are tons of different games that people love to wager money on, and these are some of the more interesting examples.

Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken
Whether you call it noughts and crosses or tic-tac-toe, it's unlikely you've ever considered playing this game against a chicken. While online casinos have offered online bingo, roulette, blackjack, and slots for a long time, they have recently moved to provide more live experiences, and Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken could be their next hit. Apparently, it takes around a month to train a chicken to play tic-tac-toe, and once trained, the poultry player proves an extremely difficult opponent to beat. While the game began as a promotional tool to attract more gamblers to the casino floor, there have been several reports that the game is still available to play at fairs and events across the US.

Birdsong
This Belgian game sees avian-loving players placing wagers on which bird will sing the loudest or the longest. The birds are positioned in their separate cages and then take turns to sing for the enthusiastic gamblers. Just like other animal performance betting activities, there's an opportunity before the action begins to get a good look at each of the competitors and decide which bird is worth a flutter. Once all bets are placed, silence descends on the crowd and the birds pipe up, to the delight of the watching crowds. The game produces genuine tension, but you're unlikely to see this one online any time soon.

Fan-Tan
China is known for its love of playing Go, but Fan-tan is also a traditional Chinese game that is less globally popular. Fan-Tan is a game of utter chance that bears some resemblance to roulette. To play, two handfuls of small objects are placed on the board and players guess the remaining total when divided by four. Once players have placed their bets (1-4), the dealer continually extracts objects from the board until only one to four beans are remaining, which determines the victor.

It sounds complex, but after witnessing a few rounds, you'll understand the process and be keen to have a go. It seems a little messy and unconventional with the objects cluttering the table, but Fan-Tan enthusiasts enjoy the simple gameplay and the game remains popular in China.

Dreidel
Dreidel is a popular game in the Jewish community and involves spinning the dreidel (a four-sided spinning top) and placing a wager on the outcome. Players place their bets by placing cash in the middle of the table and then they each take turns spinning the dreidel. A Hebrew letter features on each side of the dreidel and the meaning of each is:

  • Nun means nothing, and that's exactly what the player gets.
  • Gimel means everything, and the player takes all the cash in the pot.
  • Hey means half, and the player is entitled to take half the cash from the pot.
  • Shin means put in and results in the player adding more money to the pot.

The game concludes once the players have won the pot, and a new round usually follows.

These games might seem a little unusual to people more used to traditional casino games, but when you take the time to see the process each game follows, they are interesting games to wager on. Hopefully, these games will continue to be played and passed down from generation to generation.
