Today`s travel industry is one of the largest, highly profitable and dynamically developing sectors of the world economy. About 10% of the world`s gross product, up to 30% of service trade and approximately 7% of world investments fall to the share of tourism. In terms of profitability this sector has the 3rd place, after the gold-mining and oil-producing industries.

The following facts demonstrate the development of tourism as an economy sector in Kazakhstan. According to the Statistics Agency data, in January-September 2001 the share of internal tourism amounted to 73.7%, outgoing tourism to 24.4% and incoming to 1.9%. The number of tourism organisations increased by 1.2 times as compared to 2000, amounting to 759 enterprises.

Over 93% of all organisations on Kazakhstan`s travel market are small-scale enterprises, the activity proceeds of which amounted to 862.7 million tenge and $918 800 (84.9% of the overall profit received by Kazakhstan from travel organisations` activity). Medium-scale travel organisations constitute just 6.3% of all travel enterprises. To their share falls 19.6% of the tourism flow and 14.1% of the proceeds (154.4 million tenge and $80 100). The activities of major travel organisations are primarily focused at offering visa, excursion and other services, encompassing 42.1% of the tourist flow. The proceeds from their activity amount to 11.3 million tenge.

According to the purpose of visit the tourists coming into the republic have been categorised as follows: 49.1% arrived for business purposes, there were 48.2% of those wanting to improve their health and take a vacation, 1.1% came with the purpose of visiting their friends and relatives, 1.1% arrived for other purposes, and 0.5% of those arriving did so for religious and pilgrimage purposes.

During 9 months of the year 2001 the number of Kazakhstani tourists visiting non-CIS countries decreased by 1.7 times as compared to the same period in 2000 and by 2.9 times as compared to the corresponding period in 1999. The countries most visited by our tourists are still Turkey (31.7%), Germany (27.6%), China (16.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (8.9%). The remaining countries take up an insignificant percentage in the overall picture of travel tours.

The exhibition`s organisers, the Tourism and Sports Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the British exhibition company ITE Group PLC and its partner, Iteca, a Kazakhstan company are confident that joint efforts of the organisers, state structures, participants and visitors of the 2nd Kazakhstan International Tourism Fair – Tourism and Travel, KITF 2002 will result in new business contacts, promising meetings and will convince Kazakhstanis and foreign guests that Kazakhstan`s travel industry can bring real social and economic benefits to the country….
