Assoufid Golf Club, Marrakech – Emerging as one of Africa’s leading golf experiences

Golf Director at Assoufid Golf Club, Guy Maxwell, receives two awards at this year’s World Golf Awards.

Assoufid Golf Club forms part of an exquisite 222-hectare development, which will include a 5-star hotel and residences, and offers golfers an excitingly diverse challenge across a rolling desert landscape featuring cacti, palm and olive trees.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO – Award-winning Assoufid Golf Club, situated close to Marrakech, one of the world’s most vibrant cities, ends 2016 on a high as its reputation as a must-visit international golf experience continues to build.

Set against the backdrop of North Africa’s snow-capped Atlas Mountains, the desert-style 6,440-metre (7,042-yard), par-72 golf course, designed by Scottish PGA professional and former European Tour professional, Niall Cameron, continues to be recognised as the standout development in Marrakech.

This moniker is supported by three recent accolades: Best Golf Course in Morocco 2016, Africa’s Best Golf Course 2016 and a TripAdvisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence.

Guy Maxwell, Golf Director at Assoufid Golf Club, commented: "When I arrived at Assoufid in 2010, before the development was completed, I could see that the golf course and wider project had tremendous potential. To be awarded ‘Morocco’s Best Golf Course’ for two consecutive years and to also receive ‘Africa’s Best Golf Course 2016' accolade at this year's World Golf Awards is very satisfying.

"These new awards represent a stamp of approval that the golf course has now evolved to a level that matches other top international developments. Credit must be given to the great design work of architect, Niall Cameron, and to the efforts of the whole team at Assoufid for their ongoing commitment to deliver customer excellence.”

Assoufid Golf Club forms part of an exquisite 222-hectare development, which will include a 5-star hotel and residences, and offers golfers an excitingly diverse challenge across a rolling desert landscape featuring cacti, palm and olive trees.

The development is situated just 20-minutes from the old town (medina) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and just 10-minutes from the international airport, which has recently opened an additional terminal, doubling its capacity to nine million visitors per year.

This investment is part of the Moroccan government’s wider plans to attract 20 million international visitors per year to Marrakech by 2020.

Morocco remains one of the fastest growing golf destinations in the EMEA region and Marrakech is within a three-hour flight time of most major European capital cities. Aside from golf, the city is famed for its classical traditions of art, crafts, music and food, which are as vibrant today as they were centuries ago.

The city’s must-visit sites include the Djemaa el Fna Square, Bahia Palace, Koutoubia Tower, the largest mosque in Marrakech with a 70-metre high minaret, and the Saadian Tombs.

Guy Maxwell concluded: "The success of Assoufid underlines how seasoned golf travellers are looking for a high quality alternative to the many over-developed resorts of Spain and Portugal. Marrakech offers something culturally superior to many European golf destinations, and our superb all-year-round climate continues to draw in a growing number of golfers from the UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia.”

Assoufid Golf Club’s Roll of Honour:

  • Africa’s Best New Golf Course 2014
  • Best Golf Course in Morocco 2015
  • Best Golf Course in Morocco 2016
  • Africa’s Best Golf Course 2016
  • TripAdvisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence.
