The operating results of the Swiss hotel group Movenpick Hotels & Resorts (MH&R) have once again proved satisfactory. An EBITDA result (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation) of CHF 12.2 million (plus 56.4% compared with 2003) was recorded in financial 2004, with total sales increasing by 24% year-on-year, to CHF 536.8 million. REVPAR or Revenue Per Available Room, a comparative value used internationally, rose by 8.8% across the Group, to CHF 69.1 . The secured debt-free financial position, exceptional for the hotel industry, provides the bedrock for the hotel group’s further growth, which last year saw the official opening of new hotels in Germany, France, Egypt, Bahrain and Saudi-Arabia.

Favourable customer surveys, international awards, and excellent relations with hotel owners over many years are ample proof that Movenpick Hotels & Resorts is on the right track. With the corporate rebranding almost completed, the expansion drive is running on schedule, with the number of hotel rooms now totalling close to 12`000 rooms, a growth of 25.4% over the past year and nearly doubling the number of rooms since 1999.

In 2004 new hotels began operating in Berlin (243 rooms), at the Disneyland® Resort Paris/France (400 rooms), at El Alamein/Egypt (259 rooms), in Aswan/Egypt (234 rooms), in the Kingdom of Bahrain (114 rooms) and in Madina/Saudi-Arabia (1155 rooms). A large number of hotel establishments are currently under construction in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including the Movenpick Hotels in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, Al Khobar/Saudi Arabia, Sana’a/Yemen, Taba/Egypt, Accra/Ghana and several hotels in and around Dubai. More than 5`000 new hotelrooms are therefore set to complement the hotel chain’s portfolio in the near future.

As Jean Gabriel Peres, President & CEO of Movenpick Hotels & Resorts, explains: “Over the next two years we shall be pushing ahead with our strategy of expansion mainly in Europe but also in the Middle East and the Gulf region in particular. We have also taken over our first hotel in Dar Es Salaam/Tanzania, the Royal Palm Hotel, signalling our greater commitment and presence in central and eastern Africa in the future. High quality, outstanding culinary services and hand-picked management teams are prompting more and more hotel owners to turn to Movenpick Hotels & Resorts for the management of their fine properties.”
