In what was one of the biggest events of the year in Aruba, His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco, His Highness Prince Pieter Christiaan of the Netherlands, Aruba`s Prime Minister and other VIP`s and invited guests officially opened The Divi Links Aruba Golf Course on Friday October 29, 2004.
Festivities were held at Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort, the resort where the golf course is located. Alex Nieuwmeyer, Managing Director for Divi Resorts Aruba, presented a check in the amount of $50,000 to the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation. Made in celebration of the opening of The Divi Links Aruba and the founding of the Aruba chapter of the Laureus Foundation by H.H. Prince Pieter Christiaan of the Netherlands together with Nick Kouwenhoven, the monies will remain in Aruba for sports sponsorships. The Laureus Foundation, an organization that uses sports as a tool for social change, currently has chapters in 26 countries.
Following the presentation of the check, H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco officially opened The Divi Links Aruba by taking the ceremonial first tee-off.
On Saturday October 30, the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation Benefit Golf Tournament was held. The 18-hole Four Man Scramble, which was attended by H.H. Prince Pieter Christiaan raised money for the foundation.
Part of Divi Resorts, The Divi Links Aruba is a new 9-hole public golf course offering golfers play over water and beautifully landscaped lagoons. Located at the Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort the par 36 course features an on-site golf learning center, the Divi Links Aruba Golf School, with pro shop, two video swing analysis stations, driving range (in net) and chipping and bunker practice areas. The Divi Links Clubhouse will offer another pro shop and two restaurants when completed in March 2005.
The course also provides the backdrop for the Golf Villas at Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort, some of the most luxurious vacation villas in Aruba. Housing one- and two-bedroom suites the first 52 of the planned 250 are expected to open in December 2004.
