IHG Hotels in Portugal are awarded the coveted Green Key Certification for environmental excellence

The Green Key eco-label certification is the leading standard for excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices within the tourism industry.

IHG Hotels in Portugal announce that they have been awarded the prestigious Green Key Certification – a true testament to the hotels’ commitment to promoting sustainability in the travel and hospitality sectors. InterContinental Lisbon, InterContinental Cascais-Estoril, InterContinental Porto Palácio das Cardosas and Crowne Plaza Porto were all awarded this impressive accolade, further strengthening Lisbon’s hospitality industry’s dedication to protecting the environment.

The Green Key eco-label certification is the leading standard for excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices within the tourism industry. To be awarded the Green Key status, organisations must meet a set of high-standard environmental requirements across 13 criteria which are staff involvement, environmental management, guest information, water usage, energy consumption, washing and cleaning, food and beverage, waste management, administration, indoor environmental, green areas, green activities, and corporate social responsibility. When guests choose to stay at a Green Key-awarded property, they are playing their part in making a positive difference for environmental protection and sustainability.

“I am delighted that our properties have been awarded the coveted Green Key status. At our hotels, environmental sustainability and community empowerment is a top priority. We are constantly thinking of innovative ways that we can play our part in minimising and mitigating the potential negative impacts of a guest visiting our properties. Our teams dedicate a huge amount of time and energy in ensuring that we have a positive impact on the environment whilst helping to lay the foundations for a fruitful future for the next generations.” enthuses Maarten Drenth, IHG Area General Manager in Portugal.

Founded in 1994, Green Key represents over 4,000 tourism facilities in 64 countries and is evidence of a hotel’s commitment to reducing the negative environmental impact of a guest’s stay.
