Marriott International to open JW Marriott-branded hotel in Tripoli

Marriott International will open a 370-room luxurious JW Marriott hotel in Tripoli, Libya in addition to new properties in Peru and Puerto Rico. When opened in 2011, JW Marriott hotel Tripoli will be Marriott International’s first hotel in the country and will be run under a long-term management agreement with Daewoo Tripoli Investment and Development Co., a joint venture between Daewoo Engineering and Construction and Oyia Co.

The new hotel additions mark the 25th anniversary of JW Marriott brand and bolster the brand pipeline to 25 properties opening now through 2013, bringing the luxury hotel portfolio to 68 locations in 26 countries.

“These new additions are testimony to the attractiveness of our JW Marriott brand among hotel developers even in today’s difficult economic and financial environment,” said Ed Fuller, president & managing director of international lodging for Marriott International.

The 370-room JW Marriott Hotel Tripoli will be managed by Marriott under a long-term contract. The 36-storey, innovatively-designed hotel will be located in Tripoli’s new central business district and is expected to become a prominent landmark in the northern section of the city, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

“We are very excited to be operating one of the first internationally-branded hotels in Tripoli,” said Ed Fuller. “The city has a rich cultural and historic legacy and is emerging as a substantial commercial center in Libya. We look forward to participating in the city’s future.”

“We are very pleased to have JW Marriott as our partner to operate the hotel, which will become a landmark in Tripoli,” said OH Chang-Eun, general manager of Daewoo Tripoli Investment and Development. “We also believe the Marriott International team will be able to manage and develop the hotel as the best place to stay in the country.”

Ed Fuller added that among future openings in the next 48 months are JW Marriott branded hotels in countries like Kazakhstan, Colombia, India, China and Vietnam to coincide its 25th anniversary.

The first JW Marriott hotel opened in Washington, D.C. in February 1984 as a tribute to JW Marriott Sr., founder of Marriott Corporation, the predecessor to Marriott International. Elsewhere around the world, the first JW Marriott hotel opened in Asia (Hong Kong 1989), Europe (Bucharest 1993), Middle East (Dubai 1993) and Latin America (Mexico 1996).

Accommodations at the JW Marriott Hotel Tripoli will be luxuriously appointed and will feature Marriott’s highly acclaimed plush bed and bath linens and amenities. Rooms will have flat screen TVs, high speed internet access, in room safe and coffee/tea maker.

The hotel will have an 80-room executive level and lounge which will offer guests a comfortable and elegant oasis. For dining and entertainment, the hotel will have an open space lobby with special zones in which guests can linger over coffee, gather with colleagues for impromptu meetings, or simply relax. Three restaurants and a pool bar will give guests a wide choice of dining options. The all-day casual restaurant will offer an adjoining terrace for outdoor seasonal dining and the hotel’s two specialty restaurants will have private dining areas.

Recreational facilities will include a world-class spa, an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness center with sauna, Jacuzzi and juice bar. Other amenities will be comprised of a comprehensive business center, 24-hour room service, retail shops in the lobby, and laundry/valet services.

For meetings and social events, the hotel will have 12,300 square feet of space including an 8,109-square foot ballroom that will be divisible into four sections, and a number of conference rooms in varying configurations.

There are 43 JW Marriott hotels currently in operation worldwide with another 20 under construction and planned for opening over the next three years.
