New suites and botanical collections at Villa della Pergola in Alassio

The style of the suites varies, each having its own atmosphere, colour tones and furnishing style, and each room is dedicated to one of the many historical personages who have stayed Villa della Pergola, all members of the British colony at Alassio.

Ten years on from the restoration overseen by the architect Ettore Mocchetti, and the start-up of the relais, Villa della Pergola in Alassio has added three new suites in Casa Wisteria. This former gardeners’ lodge, the Casa Wisteria, set in the large grounds surrounded by exotic flora and Mediterranean maquis, owes its name to the important collection of more than thirty-five varieties of wisteria. There are now therefore 15 suites at the relais, where you will be welcomed for your stay and where you will be able to relax as if in your own home.

The style of the suites varies, each having its own atmosphere, colour tones and furnishing style, and each room is dedicated to one of the many historical personages who have stayed Villa della Pergola, all members of the British colony at Alassio. The homage to these British guests is echoed in the small museum in the villas that tells the story of the long sojourns of aristocratic Brits and historical personalities who came to Alassio in the late nineteenth centuries and in Edwardian times. It is a story told in images, artefacts, portraits and landscapes of Alassio and Liguria in the eighteen hundreds, where the museum itself is constantly evolving thanks to the tireless and enthusiastic research work of the owners.

There are many activities available to guests at Villa della Pergola, individual yoga lessons in the garden. For those looking to more adventurous pursuits there is the chance to take an e-bike along the beautiful and panoramic paths of Liguria, or a boat to the Isola Gallinara and do some snorkelling, or perhaps to play tennis at the Hanbury Tennis Club. Others may wish to take part in the wine and olive oil tastings at the traditional wineries inland of Albenga and enjoy guided tours of the Roman and medieval settlements around us.

Leisure time and relaxation in the gardens of Villa della Pergola
The gardens of Villa della Pergola are famous for the wisteria, all 35 varieties, and agapanthus, of which there are more than 430 varieties, as recently recorded by the SOI – Società di Ortoflorofrutticoltura Italiana. These are all there to be enjoyed by the guests staying at the relais. The grounds are one of those rare examples of the English garden in Italy, with every corner offering opportunities for leisure and relaxation. Guests can paint, take photographs, stroll among the pergolas or simply relax on a bench in the shade of a palm and admire the views of the Gulf of Alassio. More adventurous or sporty types may choose to trek in the surrounding area or ride the cycle trails.

From April to October the gardens will once again be the setting for the taking of traditional English tea, as was part of the routine of Ruth Hanbury, wife of Daniel, second child of Thomas, and the force behind and owner of the celebrated Hanbury Gardens (La Mortola, Ventimiglia) back in the nineteen sixties.

The restaurant Nove
The Villa della Pergola experience is enriched by the cuisine of the restaurant NOVE, headed by Chef Giorgio Servetto and managed by Francesca Ricci. NOVE has in just three years already received important recognition for its scrupulously prepared and authentic cuisine, which puts the quality of its ingredients as its highest priority, seeking out genuine local products from the Ligurian tradition, one that straddles land and sea, supported by the seasonal produce of Villa della Pergola’s own vegetable garden.
