Pebblebrook Hotel Trust reimagines experiential travel

Cutting-Edge "Z" Hotels showcase spirit of play.

SAN FRANCISCO – Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) is elevating San Francisco’s hotel game yet again with the newest member of their Unofficial “Z” Collection, the forthcoming Hotel Zeppelin located in Union Square.

Formerly The Prescott, Hotel Zeppelin is designed to reflect San Francisco’s rebellious and infamous counterculture, offering a seductive new hotel experience inspired by the artists, writers, poets and musicians who break the rules and change the world. Urban sophistication is paired with interesting and unique spaces that are both playfully interactive and intimate.

Hotel Zeppelin is the latest creation from the long-term relationship between Dawson Design Associates and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. “We work closely with Dawson to create original, stylish and interactive travel experiences in what we refer to as our Unofficial ‘Z’ Collection,” said Jon Bortz, Chairman, President and CEO of Pebblebrook. “Pebblebrook places design, art, play and sustainability at the forefront of the individual guest experience. This deeply collaborative approach captures the personal values and ever-changing needs of our fast-evolving and savvy guests.”

Hotel Zeppelin joins Hotel Zetta, Hotel Zelos and Hotel Zephyr as part of Pebblebrook’s Unofficial “Z” Collection that evolved after the success and impact of Hotel Zetta’s introduction in early 2012.

Hotel Zetta was designed to capture the heart and lifestyle of the tech industry. Design elements include a 30′ art installation of an interactive Plinko game and a backlit wall of Alcatraz inmates serving as a playful nod to San Francisco’s original “Facebook.” Guests seeking a remarkable, avant-garde dining experience can head to The Cavalier, Hotel Zetta’s sultry, upscale British brasserie and bar created by Big Night Restaurant Group and designed by Ken Fulk.

Hotel Zelos is an interactive spin on surrealism inspired by the duality of Escher. Design ties together fantasy, illusion and reality. Guests are encouraged to step into an experience inspired by San Francisco’s gaming community where they can become their own avatar, interacting and playing in the dark and sexy Dirty Habit lounge and bar.

Hotel Zephyr at Fisherman’s Wharf is a playfully hip and rollicking maritime adventure where everyone is encouraged to play in the hotel’s stylish outdoor Yard. Inspired by the prison yard of Alcatraz, the Yard is an adult playground of games, steampunk sculptures, cargo containers and fire pits, all designed to capture the spirit and attitude of the adjacent waterfront piers of Fisherman’s Wharf.

Re-purposed and recycled materials are used in the art and architecture of all four hotels as a playful spin on sustainable design. Hotel Zetta’s front desk is made from stacked, reclaimed lumber, while old eyeglasses morph into chandeliers and recycled electronics are used as sculpture. Enter Hotel Zelos’s lobby to find chandeliers composed of broken mirrors, continuing upstairs to Dirty Habit, a hidden oasis laced with concrete, exposed pipes and intrigue. Hotel Zephyr’s maritime theme is brought to life through the use of recycled cargo containers and shipping crates. At Hotel Zeppelin, guests are greeted by a life-size female figure sculpted of recycled tools and hardware. The piece serves as the hotel’s unofficial mascot, inspired by the 1960s “Summer of Love.” At each hotel, green programs reduce greenhouse gases as well as energy and water consumption.

“We approached each hotel as its own canvas. Great art guides our design process. With each experience, we aim to evoke a strong emotional response and intimate connection with our guests. That experience is both playfully provocative and entertaining, yet warm and inviting,” explained Andrea Dawson Sheehan, art director and founding principle of Dawson Design Associates. “We strive to develop hotel spaces that are highly flexible and designed for multiple uses including social gatherings, intimate hideaways and impromptu business meetings. Our guests demand multiple options for their functions and activities, so we’ve set out to meet their needs in a fun and engaging way.”

Each hotel offers a distinct, contemporary lifestyle experience. Reimagined guestrooms and public spaces allow hotel guests to live like locals and play in a socially engaging environment. Public spaces offer personalized hubs creatively designed for both work and play. All areas are artistically designed for both leisure and business travelers to find a playfully inventive way to connect, relax and unwind. While the spirit of play, standard of service and element of discovery is assured with every visit, the Unofficial “Z” Collection is an original creation with its own distinct vibe and attitude.
