RewardExpert discovers more than 4m. airline miles were up for grabs in the first half of 2016

Savvy travelers may know many ways to boost their available miles. Those new to reward programs, or those that don’t travel as often, are unaware of the incredible number of miles up for grabs beyond booking a flight.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – RewardExpert, a free online service designed to help travelers easily navigate the world of frequent flyer programs and credit card rewards to book flights for little or no cost, released a study examining mileage-boosting promotions offered by more than 30 airlines in the first half of 2016. RewardExpert’s findings determined that consumers had access to over four million bonus miles, with legacy airlines like American, Delta and United leading the pack in offerings.

“While many consumers know that signing up for a particular airline’s credit card is a good way to earn miles,” said RewardExpert co-founder Roman Shteyn, “few realize there are numerous promotions available to quickly rack up points and miles.” According to the RewardExpert Mileage Booster Study, there were nearly 1,000 promotions offered to consumers that could be earned through hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, shopping, credit cards, dining and taking surveys, even switching energy providers.

“Savvy travelers may know many ways to boost their available miles. Those new to reward programs, or those that don’t travel as often, are unaware of the incredible number of miles up for grabs beyond booking a flight,” added Shteyn. “This study set out to quantify just how many are available, and confirmed what we suspected: the number is staggering, and some offers are significantly more lucrative than others.”

Key findings of the RewardExpert Mileage Booster Study include:

  • U.S. legacy carriers – American, Delta and United – offered the most miles to their frequent flyer members. These airlines gave away nearly half of all the bonus miles the study tracked.
  • Budget carriers JetBlue and Virgin America were among the airlines with the most miles available per offer.
  • Credit card sign-up bonuses, vacation packages, cruises and special flight promotions provided the largest number of bonus miles. However, these types of deals are hard to come by, accounting for just 13% of all the offers found.
  • Hotel promotions made up more than half of all the offers. They aren’t the most valuable deals, however, with an average of 1,800 miles per offer.
  • Credit card bonuses and flight promotions, on the other hand, offer consumers more than 24,000 miles on average through each promotion.

Almost every frequent flyer program has a page dedicated to its partners and their miles and points promotions. RewardExpert scours these sites, along with information available through other resources, and archives mile-earning promotions, updating these offers daily at RewardExpert's Earn section.

RewardExpert provides travelers a free, easy-to-use service that maximizes airline miles and credit card points to quickly earn free airline tickets. Strategies are personalized for each traveler based on where they want to go and how many miles and points they’ve already collected through various rewards programs.
