Saudi opens doors to visitors from Asia Pacific

  • Saudi Arabia

Last year, Saudi welcomed 1 million Indian visitors, who registered the highest spend across all source markets. The target is to increase the number of Indian visitors to 7 million, while also attracting 3 million Chinese visitors, by 2030.

RIYADH – Saudi’s open invitation is precipitating gains in visitor arrivals from Asia Pacific. In the first eight months of 2023, more than 4.1 million travelers from Asia Pacific visited Saudi.
This is a 15% jump from the same period in 2019, when Saudi first opened its doors to the world. The country is aiming to welcome at least 7.9 million Asia Pacific visitors in total this year, and as of August, is 11% ahead of plan.

These figures are in line with Saudi’s exceptional post-pandemic tourism rebound, which has outpaced the recovery of its G20 counterparts, with year-on-year growth at 121%. Tourism is an important aspect of Saudi Vision 2030, the country’s blueprint for economic and social transformation. The target is to attract 150 million visitors by 2030 and to have tourism contribute to 10% of GDP. Asia Pacific source markets, particularly India and China, will be integral to this growth.

The steady growth in visitor arrivals is being supported by progressive changes in visa regulations, strategic partnerships with global industry players, the assurance and convenience of trip-planning amenities, and the allure of Saudi’s unique attractions. These encompass historical landmarks and cultural preservations, such as a floating mosque, museums, as well as old street markets through the souqs steeped in rich history and wonders like the Red Sea, crystal clear dive sites, majestic desert experiences’, and a burgeoning list of seven UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Alhasan Aldabbagh, President of Asia Pacific Markets at Saudi Tourism Authority (STA), said: “We invite Asia Pacific travelers to enjoy an authentic Saudi Hafawah experience. This warm, welcoming hospitality is deeply embedded in our culture and reflected in everything we do, including our continued efforts to ensure that visitors enjoy hassle-free travel, and unique, memorable experiences that provide a glimpse into our heritage. There is no better time to experience the unrivalled splendor of Saudi.”
