As the holidays draw close, travelers are typically gearing up for flights to see family and loved ones. However, this year many are opting to stay home due to COVID-19.
To better understand how the pandemic has shaped the air travel industry, Upgraded Points studied airplane fuel consumption before and during COVID-19. The analysis shows how the travel industry was impacted by the pandemic in terms of fuel left unused compared to last year, loss of income for airlines, and the decrease in demand overall.
Here are some of the key findings:
- At the time of this analysis, airlines have consumed about 5.4 billion gallons of fuel year to date, which is 70.36% less than the almost 18.3 billion gallons consumed in all of 2019.
- In March 2020, airliner fuel consumption decreased by 30.68%, then plummeted from April through June. May saw the worst hit at -249.27%.
