Four of the most unusual places in the world to live – and where you can find them

Burj Khalifa, Dubai

There is no place like home and some people have chosen to live in some pretty peculiar places across the globe.

While so many of us enjoy exploring and seeing famous landmarks when we head abroad for a vacation, it can also be fun to wander off the beaten track and take in some of the quirkier attractions.

There is no place like home and some people have chosen to live in some pretty peculiar places across the globe. With that in mind, here’s our pick of a few intriguing properties and buildings that have gone on to become spectacular tourist attractions in their own right – including one you could actually live in yourself.

1. House NA, Japan
If you get frustrated by the lack of natural light in your home, you could always try moving into House NA. Located in Tokyo and created by Sou Fujimoto Architects, the 914-square foot property is totally transparent – so literally all aspects of your life would be well and truly on show. As ArchitectureArtDesigns.com shows, the house – which is inspired by the idea of living in a tree – would make an intriguing addition to your Tokyo trip itinerary.

2. Burj Khalifa, Dubai
Another place where you can enjoy unobstructed natural light is in the Burj Khalifa, the 828-meter wonder which stands in the heart of Dubai and is the tallest building in the world. Seeing it is one thing, but you can even stay in it, thanks to the Armani Hotel located within its walls. Furthermore, as Bayut’s Burj Khalifa guide makes clear, the tower’s residential wing has studio, apartments, and penthouses too. So, if you choose to turn your stay in Dubai into a permanent one, you can enjoy stylish living at a whole new level of luxury.

3. Keret House, Poland
Of course, if the Burj Khalifa offers up a bit too much wide open space for your liking, you could always visit the Keret House in Warsaw. According to the official website, the property was inspired by the ‘cracks’ which have formed in the Polish city’s urban structure, with Jakub Szczesny choosing to fill one between two buildings with a living space. The result is an incredible property which is 152 centimeters at its widest point and you can arrange tours or visit on open days during selected weekends.

4. Upside-Down House, Germany
Finally, if you’re seeking a whole new perspective on home living, a stop at the Upside-Down House in Trassenheide may be a good idea. Another fascinating project conceived by Polish architects, the house was built in 2008 and was created to give people a different perspective on things they see and make use of every day. As AltasObscura.com explains, the site is open throughout the year to visitors of all ages.

A new way to live
A vacation may be a chance to enjoy some much-needed time away from home, but it is also a great opportunity to get a flavor of how many other people across the world choose to live too.

Whether you’re an architecture fan or simply someone who likes quirky attractions, we hope the ideas above inspire you as you plan your next trip.
