The world’s best fishing locations

Halong Bay, Vietnam

The idea of fishing is such a popular one that it’s turned into a billion-dollar industry, inspiring dedicated television shows and even whole television channels.

Fishing is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Those who don’t do it may not ever understand it, but those who do know that it’s the ultimate in peace and relaxation. No matter how stressful your day to day life might be, the strains and worries quickly disappear when you’re sat outside in nature with nothing to disturb you apart from the weather, and perhaps the occasional fellow passing hobbyist. It’s a fine way to spend a day or even a whole weekend, and we’d happily recommend it to anyone.

The idea of fishing is such a popular one that it’s turned into a billion-dollar industry, inspiring dedicated television shows and even whole television channels. Going further than that, fishing has turned into one of the most popular attractions at the world’s biggest online slots websites. A game called “Fishin’ Frenzy” has been attracting players for years at those online slots websites, and it’s since been followed up by a sequel in the shape of “Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways.” You might not get the same haul in cash when you go fishing for real as you would playing either of those online slots, but that doesn’t make a good catch any less satisfying.

Those of you who go fishing regularly will have your favorite spots, and you might even know several good fishing locations near you. What if you could go further than that, though? What if budget and travel wasn’t an issue, and you could go anywhere in the world for a fishing break? Well, why not do exactly that by spending your next vacation at one of the best fishing locations in the world. Don’t worry about where those locations might be – we’ve done the research for you, and we’ve outlined them below!

Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
The name ‘Tierra del Fuego’ translates into English as ‘the land of fire.’ Despite that, it’s the water in this beautiful part of Argentina that attracts the most attention. Tierra del Fuego is known as the fly-fishing capital of the world, and it’s proud of that reputation. In fact, the city is so proud of its reputation for fishing that there’s an enormous statue of a trout in the city to welcome visitors when they arrive. Brown trout are the order of the day at this archipelago, and there are at least seventy thousand of them in the water. They’re not small either; on average, the minimum weight of a trout caught here is four kilograms. It’s not out of the question that you’ll catch one that weighs ten kilograms or more if you’re prepared to spend the necessary time and be patient. The only issue with getting here is its remoteness, but the scenery you’ll pass on the way makes the trip worthwhile – as, we hope, will the fishing.

Congo River Basin
Any seasoned angler knows that you’re more likely to catch a fish in a river than a lake. In theory, that means the best place to catch fish on the planet is the Congo River Basin, which is the deepest river in the world. You'll need a special permit to fish here, and you'll also have to join up with a scheduled and registered excursion, but that's as much for your protection from the fish as anything else. That's because you'll be fishing for Goliath tigerfish, which are second only to piranha in their aggression and their habit of biting back at the humans who come looking for them. Landing just one of them can take you all day and involve a lot of wrestling; a full-sized adult can be up to four feet long, and weigh as much as 75 kilograms. This isn't somewhere to go for novices, but if you enjoy a challenge, you won't find anywhere better.

Halong Bay, Vietnam
Vietnam is worth a visit even if you're not there for the fishing. You'll find plenty of articles on our website that attest to that fact. If you do fancy a little fishing while you're there, though, head to Halong Bay and try to land yourself some squid. This is fishing in its purest form; forget all your modern equipment, and take to the water with a bamboo rod and a catch net. You'll also need a lamp to get the squid's attention when it gets dark! Even an amateur should be able to catch twenty squids or more in a single sitting, and if you can find a friendly local, they'll be able to help you to turn your haul into delicious squid sausages. Time your visit carefully, though; the squid are harder to catch in summer, and if you want the biggest, tastiest ones you'll want to be here in either October or November.

Umba River, Russia
It takes a hardy soul to come to the Kola Peninsula in Russia. It's cold, and the landscape can be inhospitable in winter months. Fortunately, you're no less likely to catch salmon in Umba Russia in June than you are in November. More salmon runs happen in the Umba River than anywhere else on the planet, so the fish flow here almost as smoothly and plentifully as the water itself. You might have to wade into the water a little to catch them, but if you're lucky, you'll have Aurora borealis and herds of reindeer to look at while you're doing it. Just be a little wary of some of the other fishers in the area, though. They're large, hairy, and a little bit angry. That's not because they're frustrated fishers; it's because they're bears. A good tour guide will keep you out of the way of the bears, and will also remind you that this is a catch-and-release location. Anyone caught taking salmon out of the water permanently is likely to find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Nobody's saying you have to travel the world to find great fishing spots. If you prefer hot weather, you can go looking for catfish almost anywhere in the American south. If ice fishing is closer to your idea of a good time, go to Brainerd in Minnesota instead. If you have a valid passport and money to spend, though, why not pack up your kit and seek out broader horizons? There’s nothing to stop you!
