A small home made device went off at approximately 1436 hrs on 29 September at the Sultan Park compound, Male’, which houses the National Museum in Maldives causing injury to 12 foreigners: 2 Japanese nationals, 2 British nationals and 8 Chinese nationals.
The Japanese and the British nationals were treated at the ADK hospital, while the Chinese were treated at the IGM hospital. The Japanese and the Chinese were treated for minor cuts and burns, while the British nationals were treated for more severe burns.
The 2 Japanese nationals and the 8 Chinese nationals, according to sources at the ADK and IGM hospitals, were discharged a short while ago.
President wishes speedy recovery for the injured
President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom visited to those who were being treated at ADK Hospital, following the injuries caused in the Sultan Park incident. During his visit yesterday evening (29 September), the President wished them a speedy recovery. He also expressed his sympathy to the injured and strongly condemned the act that left 12 foreigners injured. The president said that the Government would do all that is possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
All except two tourists, who are being treated for more severe burns, have been released yesterday evening after treatment for minor cuts and burns.
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and the Maldives Tourism Promotion Board met (30 September) with the local and foreign industry partners, to discuss and issues arising from the incident and the way forward. They emphasized the importance of wider dissemination of accurate news of the incident, and make the tourists across the globe aware that the destination Maldives, particularly with its one-island one–resort concept, continues to be safe despite the isolated incident.
It is still unknown who is behind the blast as no army group has taken responsibility yet.
