Tourism contributed RM67 billion (US$18 billion) to Malaysia`s economy in 2002, although tourist arrivals fell short of the 14 million target set by the government.
Despite much more negative projections earlier in the year, international tourist arrivals rose by an estimated 4 per cent to 14.5 million in 2002 – a new record – although the total was reportedly below target as a result of the impact of 11 September and the Bali bombings.
Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said the impressive performance contributed an estimated RM42.6 billion to GDP while foreign exchange earnings totalled RM25.2 billion. He said the weak ringgit made Malaysia a value-for-money destination for shoppers and tourists in general.
The ministry`s new target for 2005 is 14.5 million arrivals – a goal that should be easily accessible – and it is asking government for RM2 billion for promotional activities to boost demand.
