Busy New Year: MIA opens 2015 with back-to-backdaily passenger records

MIA is poised for continued success in 2015 with the introduction of American Airlines service to four new domestic destinations in March, new service to Manchester, England on Thomas Cook Airlines in May, and charter service by the new Eastern Air Lines projected to begin in the second quarter.

MIAMI – Miami International Airport began 2015 in fine fashion, ringing in the New Year by setting two consecutive single-day passenger records. On Saturday, January 3, a record 145,891 passengers traveled through the global gateway, only to be surpassed the following day when a new all-time record of 146,257 passengers flew in and out of MIA. The one-two passenger punch caps a strong holiday travel season at Florida’s busiest airport, which has welcomed more than 2.1 million passengers since December 21.

What do 146,000 passengers look like? If the Miami Heat were to sell out their next seven home games at the 19,600-seat American Airlines Arena, they would still be 9,000 people shy of MIA’s record total on January 4. The busy travel day at Miami International included:

  • 1,036 passenger flights
  • 72,358 international passengers
  • 67,062 domestic passengers
  • and 6,837 transborder passengers

“I can’t think of a better way for MIA to start off the new year than by setting a new single-day passenger record and then breaking it the very next day,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “Miami continues to be a red hot destination for travelers from around the world and MIA is proud to be the global hub that connects all of these visitors to our community.”

MIA is poised for continued success in 2015 with the introduction of American Airlines service to four new domestic destinations in March, new service to Manchester, England on Thomas Cook Airlines in May, and charter service by the new Eastern Air Lines projected to begin in the second quarter.
