Carbon Neutral Tour Operator cuts emissions further

Intrepid Travel became carbon neutral in 2010 after an intensive three-year process of engaging employees around the world in measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions.

Small group adventure tour operator, Intrepid Travel has announced that it reduced the carbon emissions from its offices and retail stores by 21 per cent in 2012. When including the operation of its tours, the reduction in emissions was 58 per cent.

The tour operator became carbon neutral in 2010 after an intensive three-year process of engaging employees around the world in measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, and was the first mainstream adventure travel company to offset emissions from its tours at an average cost of just 23p per day, which is included in the trip price.

Passengers who book flights through Intrepid are offered the option of offsetting the carbon emissions and in 2012, the number of flight offsets purchased by passengers doubled.

In the 2012 financial year, Intrepid offset over 31,000 tonnes of carbon emissions produced from its trips, flights and offices by investing in internationally accredited renewable energy projects. Intrepid’s award-winning Carbon Management Plan has been independently reviewed by Price Waterhouse Coopers and closely follows the stringent National Carbon Offset Standards set by the Australian Government.
