Election frustration driving US millennials to travel

Nearly 58 percent agreed that they need at least a holiday, or vacation, to forget about the politics going on at the current moment.

A new survey from youth tour operator Geckos Adventures into millennials' feeling about both the election and travel found a majority of young Americans are ready to skip town for a while. The survey found they are bringing forward plans to travel, specifically to escape this year’s election politics. Four in 10 young Americans surveyed say they will do a "Trump Jump" if the Donald gets elected, while three in 10 plan a "Hillary Hop" if Clinton becomes the next POTUS.

Top destinations cited for their re-ignited travel plans include:
1. Canada (47%)
2. Europe (37%)
3. Australia (15%)
4. Asia (12%)
5. Mexico (12%)

For the purposes of the survey, a “Trump Jump” and “Hillary Hop” were defined as “time abroad, traveling, taking a gap year or going overseas.” The September survey of travel plans and experiences of 2000 American millennials (ages 18-30) was commissioned by Geckos Adventures, a youth adventure tour operator for travelers ages 18 to 29.

Other findings include:
– Nearly 58 percent agreed that they need at least a holiday, or vacation, to forget about the politics going on at the current moment
– 63 percent of millennials surveyed believe Americans are more open to living abroad and traveling because of the current political situation
– More than eight in 10 are utterly dismayed or frustrated with their choices for this year's presidential elections, while just 1 in 10 expressed excitement and optimism about the election
– 61 percent are worried about the election
– 70 percent are planning to vote (13 percent are not, 17 percent are unsure)
– One in three have become so dismayed with the political options on either side they are looking into moving abroad permanently.
