Lufthansa German Airlines draw positive conclusions out of the two weeks during the Olympic Games in Athens

Lufthansa German Airlines draw positive conclusions out of the two weeks during the Olympic Games in Athens. During the peak traffic days, such as August 30th or August 31st, more than 2.200 passengers have been carried a day on 9 flights. According to Mr. Lorenzen, Manager Airport Services Greece, Cyprus and Israel, on these days 48% more passengers have been carried than during an average day.

Also Mr. Michael Suesser, General Manager Greece and Cyprus, has been satisfied. 70.000 passengers have been carried during the first half year between Greece and Germany. These are 18% more than last year. The most successful route is the route between Athens and Munich, he stated. Due to the increase of capacity and the operation of larger aircrafts on this route 70% more passengers have been transported than last year, he added.

Passengers made use of the additional ground services, such as additional opening hours of the town office, extra counters at the German House. Additional check-in services such as check-in by telephone, online and late-night check-in have been used frequently.

Apart from operational services Lufthansa has also been promoting the Olympic Games in several ways. Before the start of the Olympic Games, Lufthansa Athens has supported a team of the National Greek TV Program NET to promote Greece and the spirit of the Games in Germany. A private Greek channel, Mega TV, was invited by Lufthansa Athens to take part in the torch relay arriving in Beijing, China. Together with the Goethe Institut in Athens Lufthansa organised a Techno Party for the Olympiade at the Athens Cultural Center Gazi. With the German School in Athens Lufthansa has introduced a painting competition for pupils of 120 worldwide German Schools on the subject Olympic Games 2004 in Athens.

And finally Lufthansa has internationally designed a fascinating Online Web Game for the Olympic Games, where tickets and other prizes have been won.

During the Games Mr. Suesser has been inviting Frequent Flyers several times for dinner into the German House on behalf of Lufthansa German Airlines. Members of the Board have been joining the Games, as well as the evenings in the German House.

Lufthansa has always been supporting the Olympic Games and their spirit of sportive competition, Mr. Suesser stated. This years the games have been very special, as they came home to their original place, he added. Also Lufthansa looks back proudly to a successful Olympic athlete: In 1964 a pilot of Lufthansa, Willy Kuhweide, was winning the gold medal in sailing, when the Olympic Games have been held in Japan, he explained.

Lufthansa German Airlines was the Official Airline of the German National Olympic Committee.
