APH warns travellers flying with musical instruments to “tune in” to excess baggage fees

Ryanair recently charged a schoolgirl an extra £190 for carrying a violin onboard her flight, so to help travellers avoid similar costs Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) has put together a table outlining the airline regulations for passengers travelling with musical instruments.

The research found that, along with Ryanair, passengers should be cautious when travelling with musical instruments on Aer Lingus, bmi baby and easyJet as they will incur charges. For example, passengers travelling with Aer Lingus whose instruments are too big to take in the cabin, will need to pay a special handling fee of £26.00 online or £35.00 at the airport to carry instruments in the hold, as well as an excess luggage rate of £6.00 per kg, per one way flight.

Instruments travelling in the hold on all bmi baby flights will be charged at £17.99 per flight if booked online and on easyJet, instruments that are larger than the permitted hand luggage size will need to be checked in as a separate item of luggage costing a minimum of £18.00 per bag.

On the majority of all the other airlines, passengers with instruments that fit within the hand luggage restrictions can include this in their allowance. For larger instruments that are too fragile to place in the hold, customers can often purchase an extra seat although some airlines, such as Delta Air Lines, will only allow customers to purchase a seat for cellos. The alternative is to place instruments in the hold as part of their normal checked luggage allowance but passengers should be aware that excess luggage fees will apply if this allowance is exceeded.

Airport Parking and Hotels Ltd is one of the UK’s leading booking agencies and this year celebrates its 30th anniversary as a retailer and operator of pre-booked airport parking and travel extras. APH offers parking at all major UK airports, ports and Eurotunnel terminals plus airport hotels packaged with parking and airport lounges. APH is also a carbon balanced company and has, through the World Land Trust, helped purchase more than 1,000 acres of endangered rainforest.
