A stunning display of ancient and modern Beijing, including a performance by the world-renowned Beijing Opera, was shown last week during CONFEX 2005 to a prestige audience in the London Hilton to launch the city of Beijing`s multi-million pound pan-European marketing programme. The launch marks the city`s determination to increase tourism to the city in the run-up to Olympic Games which will be held in Beijing in 2008. This is the first time that Beijing has presented the attractions of this world heritage city to the British public.

With the numbers of tourists to Beijing increasing each year and the continued growth in business links between the capital and the United Kingdom, Beijing is ideally placed to become the premier Chinese destination for British visitors. And with the Olympics just three years away and six world heritage sites in its vicinity – more than any other major city – Beijing is now poised to become the premier tourist destination in Asia.

The event was hosted by Director General Yu of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Tourism. Speaking in front of a high profile audience which included politicians, business leaders, senior representatives of the city of London and many members of the travel industry and the media, Director General Yu said: Beijing and London are two of the world`s greatest cities and it gives me great pleasure to share our culture at this event and to reciprocate the welcome we have received. The relationship between the UK and China is growing each year and I especially look forward to the continued growth in the links between our two great cities. `Bringing Beijing to Britain` is an exciting programme and I hope it will help to foster good relations and further exchanges.

Bringing Beijing to Britain
presented a spectacular display including performances by the Beijing Opera and Chinese traditional musicians, both of which highlight the cultural and artistic delights of Beijing. Demonstrations on the evening included noodle-making and silk-painting and there were presentations on many other facets of Beijing life. Highlight of the evening was the Flowing Forbidden City fashion show which depicted the architectural forms, art and colours of the Forbidden City in fashion and fabric.
