Construction of the Attiki highway has come up against major delays and, if not completed by March 2001 – when the airport is due to open, thousands of air travellers will be forced to undertake a long and arduous journey to Athens. Additionally, the Greek government will be obliged to pay a fine to the company which is building the airport.
There appears no light at the end of the tunnel for the planned suburban railway either, considering that works are not likely to start until 2004.
