Don’t let ‘swimmers ear’ ruin your holiday fun

Over half (51 per cent) of Brits have been ill while on holiday. Whether you’re jetting off to spend a week in the sun, or spending your holidays closer to home, taking a holiday first aid kit could save a lot of stress. Include first aid essentials like plasters, insect repellent and remedies for tummy troubles, but make sure you’re also prepared for ear infections.

Research has revealed that swimming pools can often harbour a variety of nasty bugs and bacteria2, some of which can cause painful minor infections of the outer ear, also known as ‘swimmer’s ear.’

Swimmer’s ear is a minor ear infection, a common condition which affects all ages. It can be caused by swimming in unclean water, especially in hot and humid conditions or by prolonged contact with water, often affecting frequent swimmers. It can be very painful and if unprepared can ruin a holiday.

Ear specialist Rosemary Rodgers from Ear Care Services comments; “Swimmer’s ear is a common complaint especially in older children and adults who swim regularly or get unclean water in their ears, for that reason people often get it while on holiday. The condition can be painful, sufferers often experience redness and swelling inside the ear canal which can become itchy. If swimmer’s ear is suspected it is important to keep the ears dry, wearing a cap that covers the ears while showering and bathing is a good idea.”
