In the coming years, Fraport AG will invest up to €300 million annually in its existing Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), the company`s home base. Speaking at a press conference today, Fraport AG`s executive board chairman Dr. Wilhelm Bender emphasized, Ongoing major construction at the airport is an indication of our dynamics and growth; it also means we are securing the future of Frankfurt Airport and the surrounding region.

Bender explained that, for 2005, FRA is expected clearly to top the record year of 2004 when the 50-million passenger level was surpassed for the first time. Thus, modernizing and remodelling Terminal 1 during ongoing operations is a truly Herculean task. Bender asked all airport users to be understanding of any impairments to daily operations, which unfortunately cannot be fully avoided.

The second half of 2005 will present many challenges for Fraport, said Bender. However, we have demonstrated repeatedly that we can also perform particularly well during difficult times. Therefore, we look forward to the coming months with great confidence.

Current and planned construction measures were outlined to the media by Fraport`s executive board member for finance, Dr. Stefan Schulte, and Martin Schlegel, Fraport`s new executive vice president of Real Estate and Facility Management. These measures are primarily intended to increase handling capacity – as in the case of the Hall C expansion. In addition, terminal space for shops and restaurants will be expanded to increase revenues generated by this important business segment.

Further reasons for ongoing construction activity in Terminal 1 include the continuous tightening of EU security regulations, as well as the need to enhance fire safety technology, to modernize building auxiliary systems in general, and to upgrade the overall appearance of the terminal. At the same time, FRA`s two existing terminals will be made A380 compatible.
