Hamburg cruise center’s new mega ship berth to open summer 2009

Hamburg Cruise Center (HCC) will open its new mega ship berth in Altona this summer, Managing Director Gerd Drossel announced here today at Cruise Shipping Miami.

On January 20th, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg began expansion of the new mega ship berth, designed to accommodate vessels up to 300 meters long (984.2 feet).

The first mega ship to use the new berth on the Elbe River is expected to dock in late August.  Arriving passengers will be only minutes away by bus and taxi from Hamburg’s famous sites.

In April 2010, a new, modern terminal with an integrated automated gateway will open at the site in time for another cruise season.  The terminal will replace the former ferry line facility.

Beginning next year, HCC expects the new Altona terminal and berth to service numerous ships annually, as Hamburg continues to attract more ships and passengers in its role as the fastest-growing port in Northern Europe.

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has invested approximately 30 million euros in the Altona megaship complex, including development of the berth; alignment of terminal infrastructures; and construction of the surrounding area, access road, parking spaces, and public areas.  The Altona operation is downriver from the HafenCity Cruise Center.
