MSC Cruises is continuing to commit to safeguarding the environment following a new agreement with CIAL – Consorzio Nazionale per il Recupero e il Riciclo dell’alluminio (the Italian National Consortium for the collection and recycling of aluminium) – where a special collection of aluminium will be made from ships in the MSC Cruises fleet.
The collections will be made from ships departing from Genoa and Venice and recycling will take place at designated plants in the ports of Genoa and Bari. Tin cans used for drinks, foil used in cooking and storage tubs and containers will be collected and handed to CIAL for recycling. The recycled material will then be recycled into household goods and construction materials amongst other things.
It is estimated that in the second quarter of 2007 alone, approximately 15 tonnes of aluminium will be collected on board MSC Cruises. When recycled, this is enough aluminium to make 29,000 cafettiere coffee makers or 1300 bicycles.
Aluminium is 100% recyclable and can be re-used indefinitely, saving 95% on the energy needed to produce the metal from the raw material, bauxite.
MSC Cruises is at the forefront when it comes to safeguarding the environment in a number of ways. It was the first cruise company to obtain the UNI EN ISO 9002/1994 e UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 certificate, and both the company and fleet were recently certified the ISO 14001 Environmental Protection certificate.
MSC Cruises is also one of the first cruise lines to support the “Venice Blue Flag” project. This was set up to control emissions of all the ships in transit between Bocca di Porto Lido and the Maritime Station of this lagoon capital.
MSC Cruises will also continue to protect the environment on its new ships, MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida which will be built with the most modern technology to counteract environmental damage. These measures include: a grey and black water treatment plant, energy saving systems across all cabins and public spaces and non toxic paints specially formulated for ships hulls. MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida will join the fleet in December 2008 and June 2009 respectively.
