Conrad van Tiggelen, Director of the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions, has been elected Chairman of the European Travel Commission. Previous chair Eugenio Magnani, Director of the Italian Government Tourist Board, has moved to a Rome-based position within the IGTB.

Van Tiggelen joined the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions in 1990, and in 1994 became Manager Midwest at the NBTC in Chicago. In 1995, he was named Marketing and Public Relations Director in New York, but in 1999 moved to Paris in 1999 to manage the NBTC offices in France, Italy and Spain. He returned to New York in September 2001, when he assumed his present position.

Among many accomplishments for the NBTC, Van Tiggelen initiated a multimedia campaign for several European capital cities showcasing their contemporary appeals in architecture, design, art, fashion and food. He developed a similar campaign for eight European countries, this time narrowing the focus to art and architecture — experience that will serve him well in heading the promotion of US travel to Europe by ETC’s members, 34 national tourist organizations.

Van Tiggelen began his career in tourism as marketing and sales manager for an Italian tour operator. He holds two undergraduate degrees from Amsterdam University and a Master’s degree in economics and marketing.
